I’d agree that I have a lesser awareness of Deaf culture than probably most ..being similar to an Englishman abroad I’ve a lot to understand and learn from deafidom, living nearly most of my life with hearing family, friends and in hearing society. My observations lie mainly with the assumptions of most including hearing people, from what they probably perceive from “Deaf culture”
Though I have had interactions through my life with pockets of “the deaf”, I am therefor not “deaf brained”.
I know I could do extensive research to find out what learned people have discovered the deaf brain is, and I have a few theories based on the findings. But what I’d like is someone to put the finger on the button and put me out of my misery.
I know people who are deaf who don’t believe there is a “deaf brain” and its just used an an excuse to duck out of thinking, or show motivation. So if you have a “deaf brain” could you explain what you mean… thank you very much!

Being a native speaker of ASL and coming from a four-generation deaf family, I need to ask you, what is a deaf brain? I’ve never heard it before.

I’m getting the feeling that the “deaf brain” is what people use for the lack of understanding of the hearing world, either because they didn’t have the equal approach to education and language as hearing people do.
I also assume that its something like deprived auditory stimuli during development in the womb, that hearing fetus has the advantage over..
Friends believe there is no “deaf brain” its all down to experience and teaching..

Deaf brain: Visually oriented. Collectively-minded. Loves to use their hands instead of their mouths for communication. Doesn’t think speech is the be-all and end-all of existence.
How’s that for starters?

the choice is yours to decide for yourself if deaf brain really exist. although, I do not really care for the term “deaf brain” . We just learn and think uniquely.
